Acht weken geleden begonnen acht topsporters aan het avontuur van hun leven. Een afmattende tocht door IJsland met uiteindelijk doel het bereiken van de poolcirkel. Nu vele weken later waren er nog drie kandidaten over die het tegen elkaar opnamen in de allesbeslissende finale. Zo zagen we dat Miek van Geenhuizen, Laura Dekker en Bram Som begonnen met een kajakrace over de woeste IJslandse West Glacial River. Wie hier als laatste zou finishen lag meteen uit het spel.

Tijdens de race was het Laura Dekker die al snel in de problemen raakte, ze ging namelijk kopje onder. Laura: “Ik voelde mij helemaal in mijn element, ik vind alles met water eigenlijk leuk. Ik denk dat het grootste voordeel was dat ik niet bang ben voor water en dat ik het water kan lezen. Maar omdat ik zo snel ging vond ik het toch nog moeilijk om precies uit te komen waar ik heen wou.” Ondanks dat ze kopje onder ging herpakte Laura zich snel. Het was Miek die als laatste (minst snelste tijd) bij de finish aankwam en dus per direct de finale moest verlaten.

Met Bram en Laura over ging de race naar de poolcirkel door. Hun uiteindelijke doel was de poolcirkel bereiken en daar als eerste de expeditievlag omhoog te hijsen. Voor Bram en Laura begon nu eindelijk de allerlaatste helse tocht door de ruige en adembenemende natuur van IJsland. Het was Laura die als eerste finishte en zich hiermee de winnaar van Expeditie Poolcirkel 2015 mocht noemen. Daarnaast won ze ook nog eens 20.000 euro. Laura had het nooit verwacht: “Het is wel echt cool om als eerste aan te komen, vooral als je het niet helemaal verwacht. Toch gelukt, dat is wel een leuke overwinning.”
